Informatics Capstone

January - June 2017

I decided to complete my Informatics capstone project during my third year at UW rather than my 4th. It was an easy and practical decision for me: I could do research with classmates from my cohort and take care of the capstone requirement early. My team was in the research division. This meant that we would conduct our own IRB-vetted and publishable study on "anything related to people, information, and technology." Two of us were writing tutors at the time, so we decided to look at the overlap between technology and writing centers. We arrived at the topic of online tutoring and wanted to see how it could impact accessibility to services for students. We found that potential to improve accessibility largely depended on the type and format of online tutoring offered, as well as the different accessibility needs of students.

Since it was a long-term research project, we each played a different role. I was the primary researcher for the literature review, the project manager throughout the project, and the primary author of the paper. My teammates did a great deal of research and data analysis and made contributions to the writing as well.
